Yes - your hormones CONTROL EVERYTHING . How you look and feel - all have to do with your hormones and specific "Action/Reaction" mechanisms in the body. When your new diet plan stops working after a few weeks, it's because of your hormones (Leptin, Thyroid, Serotonin, Insulin, etc.). Even with your exercise program - weights, cardio, etc. Almost anything works at the beginning, but within a month or so - it all stops because of HORMONES again (HGH, Cortisol, Testosterone, Estrogens, IGF, Progesterone, etc.) "Action/Reaction" Survival Mechanism
People seem to forget that the human body hasn't evolved much in THOUSANDS of years. Science shows a 2% change in 10,000+ years of evolution. So, your body is still operating as it once used to thousands of years ago when food was scarce and having HIGH BODYFAT for the "winter" season was a needed survival mechanism. Hence, your body WANTS to hold on to fat because it doesn't know when your next meal will be. 1. INCREASE Your Thyroid Hormone & Keep It HIGH. Pre-Summary: Most people's thyroid is under active (especially women) and NOT OPTIMAL for fat loss. The minute you start to diet and/or reduce carbohydrates, your thyroid slows down even more - this is why you stop losing weight after a few weeks.
Your thyroid hormone controls your metabolism. The higher your thyroid, the faster your metabolism.
The minute you reduce total calories, your body's natural defense mechanism is to lower your thyroid hormone, so you don't lose weight too quickly. This is why after a couple weeks on a new diet, you STOP losing fat. It's not because that specific diet stopped working or you did something wrong. Your body has adapted to the lowered calorie content, by ALSO lowering your thyroid hormone in order to SLOW your metabolism. Remember, you body does NOT like change. This Is Why LOW Carb Diets Do NOT Work!
Incidentally, this is also why very low carbohydrate diets (like Atkins) stop working after a few weeks. Your thyroid gland requires a certain amount of carbohydrates in order to convert T4 thyroid into the super fat burner T3 thyroid. Of course, the problem is if you eat too many carbohydrates, you'll get fat. So, this is an on-going balancing act which leads us to the next vital "fat controlling" hormone: 2. REDUCE Insulin Levels & INCREASE "Receptor" Sensitivity Pre-Summary: As we age, our body becomes less sensitive to sugars and carbohydrates, which means higher insulin secretion. This means the foods you eat converts to fat easier and also increases the chance of diabetes as well.
People who get fat easily, especially in those stubborn areas (legs, butt, stomach, thighs, etc.), should NOT eat too many total carbohydrates, especially simple sugars and high Glycemic Carbs.
When you do, your body really increases your insulin levels and shuttles all the food you just ate straight to your fat cells. This is also why people who are NOT "carb tolerant", get sleepy and mentally slow when eating carbohydrates such as breads, pastas, rice, etc. And when your body doesn't "utilize" carbohydrates and sugars very well, you tend to have highs and lows with your energy levels, moodiness and you tend to get hungry a lot quicker. You Will Eventually Become DIABETIC!
By the way, you'll also have a much higher chance of becoming diabetic as you age because of the over load and over-work of your pancreas! Oh and here's an interesting fact - it's estimated that almost 63% of adults in the US, over the age of 45 ARE type-II diabetic and most don't even know it! Ironically, people who do NOT tolerate carbs, actually crave MORE sugars and carbs, even though your body doesn't utilize them well. Which leads to the 3rd and final chemical which controls your appetite and that is: 3. INCREASE Your Serotonin Levels to REDUCE Appetite Pre-Summary: When Serotonin levels are low, you are hungry and depressed. Raise Serotonin and you stop craving junk food, sugars and become happier too. Women are especially VERY sensitive to Serotonin and this is evident during menstrual cycles.
Having reduced "insulin sensitivity" as described above is one reason you crave sugars, but your brain's Serotonin levels is one of the PRIMARY appetite controlling chemicals in the body.
When you are tired, stressed, sad, depressed, menstruating or basically just not feeling good, Serotonin drops and guess what raises it back to "normal"? ... FOOD and more specifically, carbohydrates, sugars and salt. Ever Crave "Junk" Food, Especially At Night?
